Cooking with Cadbury
The aroma of ingredients flooded my nostrils as the flame of the stove danced free. My heart beating happily, knowing I’m where I belong. The kitchen windows were open and the sun beamed upon my growing herbs. Stacks and stacks of cookbooks sprawled messily across the counter. My apron, which used to be white, but overtime has been painted colourfully with different ingredients, was on and tied tightly around my waist. I had thrown my hair into a bun on the top of my head, however, as I saw my reflection on the door of the oven, I realised it now looked more like a pancake, with strands falling out from all directions. As I heard the doorbell ring, and it dawned on me how early they were, a quick sense of panic shot through my body as I noticed the state in which myself, and my kitchen was in.
Pouring myself a glass of wine, I could hear the bellow of my father’s laughter as it travelled from room to room. The more time I spent in my kitchen, the more I wished that I didn’t have any guests round and could spend the afternoon cooking and baking instead. For a good few minutes, my mind pondered on some of the mouth-watering creations that I have whipped up in the past; chicken alfredo, salmon stir fry, roast beef, crème brulé and biscoff cheesecake. I began to taste the delicious flavours of each dish as a smile crept its way onto my face, stretching from ear to ear. Amongst all the noise, I could hear the friendly barks of my adorable chocolate brown Labrador, Cadbury, whilst he proudly guarded his favourite toys. With my rolling pin, I carefully cut the puff pastry that I had been waiting to slightly soften, and delicately placed it on the roof of my pie. The herbs and spices that I had coated the chicken in escaped, as the scent seeped through the pastry. The familiarity of garlic, rosemary and paprika filled the suffocating kitchen air, as the windows began to steam up. The heat of the oven slapped me in the face as the door opened. I set my timer and the sudden urge of relaxation swarmed through my body, knowing the most stressful part of cooking was over.
Slowly strolling into the dining room. Cadbury lay on the carpet, soaking up the warmth of the crackling fire as it silently roared. With the crunch of the crisps I had put out as pre meal snacks, the noise of our joy floated among us, as we chatted, chuckled and chewed. Looking around and seeing my family all in one place, I couldn’t help but smile. A perfect Sunday. My youngest cousins were running like cheetahs around the garden, leaping over the flower beds and chasing the bubbles that they were blowing. The abrupt buzzing of the timer rung through the house pleading for me to go back to my kitchen duties. As I took the pie out of the oven, my senses where overwhelmed and the golden top glistened in the ray of sun shining through. Everyone came bustling in and took their place at the table, eager to eat. My cooking stood confidently in prime position, ready for my guests to devour. Realising I had left the gravy in the kitchen, I turned around to see Cadbury. He was sat still, looking up at me with his big brown puppy eyes, that look like pots of honey. I gave the scrumptious gravy one more mix, before carrying it into the dining room. My mouth instantly went dry as I flustered about what I had walked into. I could feel tears instantly well up in my eyes, as I forced them not to roll down my face. Everybody was silent, except for Cadbury. His nose was covered in pastry flakes, and his cheeks were full of chicken. He had eaten the whole pie.
